Cancellation of Spring Sports Due to School Closure
On April 3, CIF officially announced that the remainder of all spring sports would be canceled due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak. Many seniors were saddened by this news, as they lost out on what would have been their final high school season. Among them is senior and boys’ varsity golf captain Jason Nowacki who, as a third-year varsity player, expressed disappointment about not being able to play out his final year.
“I was really bummed out when I found out the season was canceled, since I was looking forward to playing against the other schools in Bay League,” Nowacki said. “We won [the Bay League title] the last four years in a row, so I [was looking forward to the possibility] to win it again.”
Like the boys’ golf team, the boys’ varsity tennis team had high expectations for their season as well. Senior and boys’ varsity tennis captain Kevin Liu believes that they had a good chance to win CIF Division I, as the team had a record of 3-1 before the season was canceled. Regardless, with his final season ending abruptly, Liu will miss the competitions he could have had and especially the memories he made with his team.
“It sucks that I cannot finish off my senior season, but I did have a great time during the past three years,” Liu said. “I am going to miss connecting [and] hanging out with my teammates [as well as] being able to compete against fellow players from other schools.”
Athletics teams are not the only teams whose seasons were interrupted due to the global pandemic. The robotics team was scheduled to compete in the Sacramento Regional from March 25-28. If they had performed well at the regionals, they would have progressed to the For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology Championship in Houston. Although senior and robotics team president Anderson Sutandinata was shocked when he found out that the competition was canceled, he came to the realization that this was a necessary precaution under the current circumstances with COVID-19.
“I was looking forward to closing out my nine years of robotics competitions with a bang and being with my friends and teammates that have been there since the beginning [of high school],” Sutandinata said. “But I feel that nearly everyone understands why we are not able to attend, and, [we are] happy with how we performed [leading up to the Sacramento Regional].”
The For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology president stated that the program hopes the 2021 season proceeds as normal. Regarding sports, the CIF says that as of now, there are no official changes to any of the summer rules or events.
