Athletic Director Wendell Yoshida Retires
On June 12, Athletic Director Wendell Yoshida announced his official retirement from Peninsula, eliciting surprise and sadness from parents and students. Even before stepping into his current position as Athletic Director 18 years ago, Yoshida worked alongside hundreds of students as a coach, mentor and teacher. When he was the girls’ basketball coach at Peninsula from 1987-99, Yoshida won 13 consecutive Bay League Championships, six CIF titles and two State Championships. His investment in students reaches far beyond their performance in athletics, as he tried to personally connect with as many athletes as he could. Unfortunately, Yoshida’s final year on staff was interrupted by coronavirus (COVID-19). As such, he was unable to say his final goodbyes in person.
“I miss seeing the students participate on their athletic teams, [as well as] my colleagues,” Yoshida said. “Since I am retiring on June 12, it has been tough not knowing if I will see some people again,” Yoshida said.
Quarantine has been a learning experience for Yoshida. Being away from his daily routine has taught him the importance of family and friends in his life. Although Yoshida is reluctant to leave the Peninsula family, he is still excited for the next chapter of his life to begin.
“What I have learned is to not take anything for granted because it can be gone in a flash,” Yoshida said. “I find myself being more appreciative of my family, friends, pets and all of the people I love.”
