The long awaited question has now been answered- How will Proposition 30 directly affect the school calendar for Peninsula. The final schedule for the second half of the 2013- 2013 school year was decided by the Board of Education, the California School Employees association, PVPUSD administrative leadership team, and the Palos Verdes Faculty Association.

The furlough days in question included Mon., Jan. 28, Mon., Feb. 8, Mon., April 22, Fri. May 17 and Fri. May 17. A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was previously agreed upon last year during the 180 days conflict. The MOU was put into order and it was decided that only Fri., May 24 would be a student free day and that all other questioned days would be adjusted to instructional days.

“The final ADA [Average Daily Attendance] for this school year showed an increase of $1.43 over last year’s number,” Principal Mitzi Cress said. “Because of this increase, there will only be one furlough day instead of the four originally announced.”

The furlough days have been an issue since last year. The increased number of days will create more revenue for school, due to the money provided by the average daily attendance of each student.

Students are disappointed by the lack of vacation days yet understand the future benefits.

“ I wish we had those school days off just so there could be more of a break,” sophomore Bailey Kauffman said. “ I understand though that the extra days will help us learn better.”

Students and faculty are relieved that any confusion has been eliminated and that the school schedule is final.
