On Monday Sept. 24, Director of Admissions Julie Shimabakuro and Vice Chancellor for Students Sharon Stahl came from Washington University in St. Louis to speak with Peninsula seniors and their parents. The main focus of the meeting was for the students to learn more about picking the right colleges and to have open, honest discussions with their parents about personal decisions and life choices.

“People get so worked up about college choices, but if students and parents just start thinking early, everything else falls into place,” Director of College and Career Center, Terri Lewallen, said.

At the meeting, Stahl stressed the importance of student communication with parents. Serious, frank discussions took place, and students discussed their personal lives, some even consisting of drinking and dating.

“It is so important that students can talk openly with their parents,” Lewallen continued. “It’s not about what everyone else wants you to do; it’s about what you want to do. Working together with your parents can help you find the college that is the perfect fit.”

The meeting also covered the need for students to use the support systems at the universities and being proactive while having good values. Students were reminded of crucial responsibilities and the changes of growing up.

“Sharon Stahl delivered a very poignant message about the reality of student life on college campuses, what students should expect their freshmen year and what parents of college freshmen should expect,” Assistant Principal Stephanie Scott said.

“My mom and I were able to get on the same page about college and applications,” senior Bethan Saunders said. “We were able to communicate well during this very stressful time.”
With help from parents, students will have no problem. Thanks to Shimabakuro and Stahl, seniors may have a better idea of how to make wise decisions for their future.
