Nicknames signify identity
Whether it’s because the name is complicated or just to show endearment, there are many reasons people give nicknames to each other. Nicknames may arise suddenly but stick with someone perpetually. Some believe that nicknames can make a relationship more firm and concrete, and nicknames can often describe the strength of a relationship.
Psychologist Carol Francis has been working with individuals for 32 years using various forms of therapy and counseling. Francis says that over the years, she has found that there is usually a series of nicknames between people who are close to each other, such as girlfriends, husbands and wives, and parents and children. In those relationships that are positive, there is usually a series of nicknames automatically used.
“My nickname is Sam, short for Samantha,” freshman Samantha Enders said, “I feel like you feel more closer and more bonded if you call someone with a nickname.”
Because nicknames can add accessibility and a stronger emotional tie, studies conducted by The Ladders have shown that people with nicknames have a higher chance of earning a better salary and becoming the CEOs of a company than people who did not.According to LinkedIn, nicknames are a sign of trust and closeness, which can be crucial when leading an organization.
Francis agrees that having a playful nickname, such as Jack to a person named Jacqueline, is a sign of affection. It can be used in a sarcastic or playful way due to the fact the name Jack has a masculine connotation to it.
“Certain nicknames can give kind of a intimate connection”, Francis said. “The person is likely to be very casual and playful.”
According to Psychology Today, because nicknames are given based on appearances and personalities, it can reflect on what type of a person people think one is and can impact their life significantly. Even if it is not a person’s given name, nicknames can often stick with someone impact a person remarkably.
