As his teammates look on, senior captain Jake Hoeger chases down and returns the tennis ball towards his South opponent. After a lengthy rally, he slams a powerful forehand winner across the court, ending the match. Despite the team’s 2-2 record so far, Hoeger looks prepared for a great season.
“I feel really good about this season,” Hoeger said. “I’ve gone up against some really tough competition and I’ve been lucky to have played so well against them.”
In his previous three varsity seasons, Hoeger has worked to become the team’s best singles player. With his wins in his singles matches, he has helped the team to a 10-8 victory over South and a 14-4 win over Torrance.
Against a nationally ranked University High team, Hoeger fought hard but eventually lost a close match 6-4 to Gage Brymer, ranked fourth in the nation.
However, he beat Harvard Westlake’s Michael Genender. who is ranked 23 nationally, 6-3. Hoeger is now ranked 150 in the country and 30 in California.
As a captain of the squad, Hoeger’s work ethic and friendly attitude inspires not only the underclassmen on the team, but also his fellow captains as well.
“Jake really energizes the team with his pep talks before the matches,” senior co-captain Jeff Chen said. “His competitive but friendly personality contributes to our team’s spirit.”
With a dominant 14-4 record so far, Hoeger looks to improve on his victorious streak and capture the Bay League singles title.
